Recently because of ‘lockdown V3.5’, I’ve had the chance to look back at the personal design process and approach to that I take when working on projects.

Every designer/agency will have a different approach when it comes to working on design projects, but I thought It would be useful to share my process and give people an insight of how I typically work on various branding/design projects on a day to day basis.

The first step for every project is to discuss the design brief. If you don’t have one written up, don’t worry, as we can have a chat and put one together.

The second stage, after we have discussed the project deliverables/brief, is the research phase. This is a very important part of the design process, as this will define the direction of the branding process. This generally comprises of researching into main competitors, target audience/market and also putting together visuals and mood boards for inspiration.

Once the design direction has been established, the design concept stage can begin. This is when the fun begins, and ideas start to come to life. I generally start this process the good old fashioned way, by sketching out any ideas on paper. Once I have a few concepts together, I then start to put the digital designs together.

I normally design around three different concepts, to begin with, I also include both black and white and colour variations. This sometimes helps to bring the designs to life and gives a good idea of how the brand identity will look and feel.

The next stage is to refine and develop any concepts.
This is also when any context/format is considered, if the identity design is for digital and print, this is when any mockups, prototyping and printed proofs will take place.

Signed and delivered. Once the final design has been established and signed off, the final artwork/print will be sent over and delivered in all relevant formats.

That’s it simple. You’re now ready to launch your new brand into the big, wild world.
